Driving Digital Transformation Of Employee Health And Safety Processes At Asian Paints
Forward-looking organizations adopt a strategic viewpoint on managing the health and safety of their employees, and building sustainable operations. One such example is Asian Paints, one of the top 10 paints and coatings companies in the world. Founded in 1942, Asian Paints is an industry bell-weather with more than $2.5B in annual revenues and more than 7,500 employees worldwide. The company, along with its subsidiaries, has operations in 15 countries across the world with 26 paint manufacturing facilities, servicing consumers in over 60 countries through Asian Paints Berger, SCIB Paints – Egypt, Apco Coatings, Taubmans, Kadisco, and Causeway. Asian Paints is also present in the Home Improvement and Décor space in India through Sleek (Kitchens) and Ess Ess (Bath Fittings).
Asian Paints has a stated safety performance vision of zero accidents, zero occupational illnesses, and zero incidents. To accelerate the digital transformation journey that can help turn the company’s vision into reality, Asian Paints partnered with ProcessMAP in 2019. By leveraging the capabilities and scalability offered by ProcessMAP’s comprehensive, integrated suite of HSE software solutions, known as iSafe within Asian Paints, the paint and coatings industry leader aims to achieve the following key strategic objectives:
- Ensure enterprise-wide standardization and accountability across key HSE processes
- Adopt a one-stop platform to manage all safety activities and digitize various manual processes
- Proactively identify and mitigate risks through comprehensive risk assessments
- Track company-wide HSE metrics by leveraging real-time analytics and actionable data intelligence
- Improve enterprise-wide user engagement through an intuitive and user-friendly interface
- Drive comprehensive stakeholder engagement and accelerate organizational initiatives to build safety as an operational culture
Asian Paints already had mature HSE processes in place but required a powerful data intelligence platform to truly realize the value of their processes.
In the words of Mr. N Jagannadha Rao, Chief Manager – Corporate Quality and Safety at Asian Paints, “At Asian Paints, we were looking for a global partner with a comprehensive and scalable HSE software platform to complement our highly-matured internal processes.”
For example, the company started a Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) initiative in 2014 and for the fiscal year 2018-19, more than 1,400 man-hours were invested in training factory employees on BBS best practices. Additionally, the supply chain leadership team have undergone a workshop on safety culture building. This is mandatory before they assume their respective roles.
Similarly, the company hosted 16,000+ Safe-UnSafe Act (SUSA) conversations across all cadres of employees in FY 2018-19 to promote a safety-driven culture. The company made significant investment on ensuring engineering controls and also in 28000+ training hours to develop effective health and safety capabilities across the entire workforce. Additionally, Asian Paints ran a program – Suraksha Sarvopari (Hindi for “Safety, Above All Else”) – a comprehensive safety program for the company’s warehouses that includes safety audits, incident management, and training and communication for all concerned stakeholders.
As Asian Paints and ProcessMAP partner on this journey towards achieving the health and safety vision of the company, and cultivate a world-class safety culture across all locations, N Jagannadha Rao and his team are setting an example on how growth-focused industry leaders must prioritize employee health and safety as a strategic business imperative.
