It’s been more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our daily lives and business operations. As of March 02, 2021, there have been at the least 115 million positive cases worldwide, and more than 2.5 million deaths attributed to COVID-19. In the United States alone, there have been more than 29 million positive cases reported and sadly more than 500,000 deaths. While these are staggering numbers, the actual scale of the pandemic’s impact on everyone’s life is beyond description.
However, since December of 2020, there have been some rays of light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. In the United States, as of today, three different vaccines have received the emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have been recommended for use by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, several other countries like Canada, India, France, and the United Kingdom among others, and the global COVAX initiative by the World Health Organization (WHO) have provided emergency use authorization to the Covishield vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca and the Serum Institute of India.
In the United States, as of March 02, more than 51 million first-doses and more than 26 million second-doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines have been administered. As more people get vaccinated in a staggered manner, and businesses resume their operations to the level prior to the onset of the pandemic, EHS leaders at companies are struggling to keep track of the vaccination statuses of employees, contractors and visitors. This is particularly critical so as to ensure that partially vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals are not exposed to COVID-19-related risks at the workplace.
Moreover, according to a recent survey1 of HR professionals and employees in the U.S. conducted by the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), about 28% of the respondents indicated that they may choose not to get vaccinated.
